Aqua vs concentrated liquidity (Uniswap v3)

Concentrated liquidity was once a major DeFi innovation. But it didn't solve liquidity fragmentation. 1inch Aqua builds on the idea by letting the same wallet balance back multiple concentrated positions.
Once concentrated liquidity changed DeFi. Before Uniswap v3, liquidity providers (LPs) supplied assets across an entire price curve. Much of that liquidity would never be used, making capital inefficient.
Concentrated liquidity solved that problem by letting LPs choose where their liquidity should be active. It was a major leap forward. But it also introduced new trade-offs.
How concentrated liquidity works
With concentrated liquidity, you don't provide liquidity across every possible price.
Instead, you choose a price range where your liquidity will be available for trading.
As long as the market price stays inside that range, your position earns swap fees. Because your liquidity is concentrated where trading is expected to happen, it can generate more fees per dollar than traditional full-range pools.
The downside is simple.
If the market moves outside your selected range, your liquidity stops earning fees until the price returns or you create a new position.
Capital becomes more efficient...
Concentrated liquidity dramatically improves capital efficiency.
Instead of spreading liquidity across prices where no trading occurs, LPs can focus their capital around the current market price.
For active traders and experienced LPs, this often produces better fee generation with the same amount of capital.
This innovation quickly became the standard across much of DeFi.
...but liquidity becomes more fragmented
Greater efficiency comes at a cost.
Every concentrated position occupies its own price range.
An LP who wants exposure to multiple ranges must split capital into multiple positions. The same happens when providing liquidity across several trading pairs, protocols or chains.
As a result, liquidity becomes increasingly fragmented.
Instead of one balance supporting multiple opportunities, every position competes for its own allocation of capital.
The more strategies an LP wants to run, the more that balance gets divided.
Active management becomes part of the job
Concentrated liquidity also requires ongoing management.
Markets move.
A range that generated fees yesterday may be out of range tomorrow.
To keep earning, LPs often need to monitor prices, adjust their positions and redeploy liquidity into new ranges.
That means:
- more transactions;
- additional gas costs;
- more time spent managing positions;
- periods where liquidity may earn nothing.
For some LPs, this active approach is worthwhile.
For others, it creates complexity that didn't exist in earlier AMMs.
MEV doesn't disappear
Concentrated liquidity also inherits many of the same MEV challenges as traditional pooled AMMs.
Because fees are shared among liquidity providers inside an active range, sophisticated bots can still exploit timing advantages.
One example is Just-in-Time (JIT) liquidity, where bots add liquidity immediately before a large swap and remove it immediately afterward, capturing fees that would otherwise have gone to long-term LPs.
Improving capital efficiency alone does not eliminate this behavior.
Aqua takes a different approach
Aqua keeps the benefits of concentrated liquidity while rethinking how liquidity is allocated.
Like concentrated liquidity, Aqua lets you create positions within specific price ranges to improve capital efficiency.

- adding another strategy usually means splitting your balance again.

- one wallet balance can support multiple concentrated positions simultaneously;
- liquidity stays available across more opportunities without being pre-divided.
The result is better capital utilization while preserving the flexibility that made concentrated liquidity attractive in the first place.
Self-custody changes the experience
Another key difference is where your assets live.
Traditional concentrated liquidity requires tokens to be deposited into a liquidity pool.
With Aqua, tokens remain in your wallet until they're needed to settle a swap.
This preserves self-custody while allowing your balance to support multiple positions at once.
A new evolution of concentrated liquidity
Concentrated liquidity solved one of DeFi's biggest problems: capital inefficiency.
Aqua addresses another: capital fragmentation.
Instead of asking LPs to choose between efficient positions, Aqua lets those positions share the same underlying balance.
